Shotgun King is a very unusual strategy game where you no longer have the familiar chess pieces, but only a king wielding a shotgun facing off against an entire chessboard. From the very first moves, the game creates a feeling that is both familiar and new, because it’s still chess, but every decision is tied to the rhythm of shooting and survival.

Introduce about Shotgun King

Shotgun King is a very uncommon strategy game, modeled on chess but completely turning around the familiar roles. Instead of commanding an entire army, you only control a single king, but in exchange, you also have… a shotgun. When I began I thought it was funny and curious because the idea was quite absurd. However, following a few games, I started to notice that the game is not as easy as it looks.

After some time playing, the most apparent sensation is that each move must be chosen carefully. You must predict your moves to avoid checkmate while simultaneously setting yourself up to shoot down your opponent’s pieces. Truthfully, there were times where I got so lost in shooting that I forget to retreat and ended up getting cornered and losing very fast.

Unusual chess gameplay

The most noticeable thing when starting Shotgun King is that you only have one king on the board, while your opponent has a full army like in normal chess. When I first started playing, I found it a bit funny, because I was used to protecting the king, but here the king is the main character, hunting down opponents on its own. But after a few games, I started to feel the real tension.

After playing for a while, I realized the pressure was always weighing on every move. You have no pieces to sacrifice, no one to shield you. Every move requires thinking about whether you’ll be checkmated or cornered. In reality, during gameplay, there were times when I was so focused on advancing to take down a strong piece that I forgot about my retreat, and just a few moves later I was cornered.

This “counterintuitive” nature is what makes the game so captivating. You no longer play chess in the familiar way, but have to relearn how to read the board, considering position and distance more important than ever. Each game is short, but at the end I often ask myself: “What if I had made a different move?”, and then press play again.

Shooting and repulsion mechanism

The king’s shotgun isn’t just for dealing damage, it also repels enemy troops. When I first started playing, I simply thought about shooting down all the enemy pieces. But after playing for a while, I started paying attention to the repulsion force. Sometimes, shooting isn’t about killing, but about pushing the opponent away, clearing a path for escape.

In reality, during gameplay, I’ve had games where I didn’t shoot down many units, but instead used the pushback to create space, then squeezed through a narrow gap to avoid being checkmated.

The more I played, the more I realized that each shot had to be carefully considered. Ammo is limited. Shooting too early means running out of ammo when needed. Holding back too long means being cornered. Sometimes I stand still for a few seconds just looking at the board and wondering: “If I shoot this unit, where will it go? Will I still have a place to stand afterwards?”

The upgrade system after each round

One thing that keeps me playing Shotgun King is the upgrade system after each round. After winning, you get to choose an upgrade, which could be more ammo, increased range, a change in shooting style, or making your opponent stronger to gain other advantages. When I first started playing, I chose quite randomly, picking whatever sounded good. But after playing for a while, I started thinking more carefully.

In reality, I realized that each choice significantly affects the next round. Once, I chose an upgrade to increase my shooting power, which felt great, but it gave my opponent stronger units, and the following rounds were extremely tense.

This system makes each replay feel fresh. Some days I build for high firepower, other days I prioritize survival. And when I lose, I don’t get too upset, I usually think: “Maybe I chose the wrong upgrade, let’s try a different approach.”

Graphics and sound

Shotgun King has a fairly minimalist graphic style; it’s immediately obvious that it doesn’t try to be grandiose. The board, the pieces, everything is drawn simply, with clear colors, somewhat resembling a dark, cartoonish style. When I first started the game, I found everything quite neat, without unnecessary details. But after playing for a while, I found that this simplicity helped me focus more on the board and the moves, instead of being distracted by the surrounding images.

Regarding sound, Shotgun King does a pretty good job of creating a tense atmosphere. The sound of the shotgun blast is very satisfying, concise yet powerful, each shot distinctly different from the light movements on the board. When not firing, there are only the soft footsteps and the mellow background music. In reality, this contrast makes each shot feel more important.

Shotgun King is not just a fun and unique game, but also feels like you’re solving a continuous tactical puzzle. Each match is short, but enough to make you want to play again immediately, just to try a different approach. For me, this is the kind of game that’s both easy to get into and deep enough to make players think, perfect for playing short matches but still keeping them engaged.
