Introduce about Age of War 2

Age of War 2 is a real-time strategy game that can be said to be β€œold but not out of date”. From the get-go, the game offers nothing flashy in terms of graphic detail and mechanics and does not try to reel you in with psychedelic graphical weather effects. Instead, you quickly fall into an obvious rhythm of resource accumulation, troop summoning, and slowly pushing the lines closer to the opponent.

The standout feature of Age of War 2 is that it enables players’ evolution through different ages, from primitive to futuristic. Whenever you upgrade an age, the battlefield shifts ever so slightly, adding new units and necessitating the adjustment of your strategy. In reality, this sense of progress doesn’t just come from the strength of the units, but from the player’s understanding of the game through each battle.

Evolution through eras

Initially, you only have primitive units, fighting rather slowly, and the damage isn’t visually impressive. But after playing for a while, you start to feel impatient. You want to move to a new era. You want stronger units. You want the battlefield to look different. And that feeling prevents players from remaining stagnant in one gameplay rhythm for too long.

Evolution is sometimes not very early that you should do. When entering the later stages of a game too quickly and without a strong economy, new units are weak and easily killed. And that’s not because the game says so. But because they themselves feel like it’s not quite right.

Each era changes quite noticeably. The units are completely different. The tactics are also different. This feeling doesn’t come from tutorials, but from playing several stages in a row, losing, and then understanding it on my own. And this is what prevents the game’s evolution mechanism from becoming dry.

Diverse unit system

Many strategy games become confusing the more you play, with too many units to remember. Age of War 2 is different. The number of units in each era is just enough for players to think about, but not to the point of having to memorize them all. With longer play, you will naturally develop reflexes. When you see a certain type of enemy unit, you should react accordingly.

Some units look weak at first glance, but when used at the right time, they can be very annoying. Some units are strong, but if you spam them without planning, you’ll lose money very quickly. In later stages, I started paying more attention to the timing of troop deployment, rather than just sending them out whenever I had money. And this feeling came quite naturally, without being forced.

You’ll understand it yourself after playing long enough. Some units are used to stall for time. Some are for destroying towers. Some should only appear when you’ve already gained control of the battlefield. These thoughts didn’t come from the start, but from losing a few frustrating matches, then reflecting on where I went wrong.

The pace of the game changes from match to match

One interesting but rarely mentioned thing is that the pace of Age of War 2 matches isn’t consistent. Some matches are very fast, almost without time to breathe. Others are long and drawn out, especially when both sides have relatively balanced age progression. This makes me feel like I’m not grinding a formula.

After playing for a while, you’ll realize that some wins aren’t due to stronger units, but to greater patience. Knowing when to save money. Knowing when to take a break. There are matches I win that don’t feel overly exhilarating, just a sense of relief. But there were also times when I had to pause for a few seconds after winning a match, because it felt so intense.

Graphics and sound

When it comes to the graphics of Age of War 2, the first impression isn’t that it’s beautiful, but rather familiar. It’s the familiar kind of old 2D strategy games; you understand what you’re playing at a glance, no need for long familiarization. The characters are drawn simply, a bit crudely, and the movements aren’t as smooth as modern ones, but strangely, after playing for a while, that’s no longer a drawback.

The sound in the game is also quite simple. The sounds of fighting, shooting, and explosions are pleasant to the ear, not too loud. The background music is repetitive, but strangely, it’s not annoying. After playing for a long time, I almost don’t pay attention to the music anymore, but if I turn it off, it feels incomplete. Perhaps the sound of Age of War 2 isn’t intended to make a strong impression, but rather to serve as background, maintaining the rhythm of the battle. And with this type of game, that’s enough.

Age of War 2 isn’t the kind of game that overwhelms you the first time you open it, but it has a very lasting appeal. The more you play, the more you understand why seemingly simple mechanics maintain their engaging pace for so long.
