Roundguard is a roguelike game developed by Wonderbelly Games. It was first released in March 2020 for iOS, Windows, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch. An Android version was released in 2023. Upon its release, the game received overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics for its engaging roguelike gameplay. On Google Play, despite being a paid game, it has received over 100,000 downloads.
Roundguard’s incredibly fun gameplay
The royal castle is under attack by monsters, and the king has been captured. You will choose one of four characters: The Warrior, The Rogue, The Wizard, and The Druid. Your mission is to eliminate all enemies and find a way to rescue the king. Roundguard’s gameplay is designed like a pinball game. You will shoot your character from a machine at the top of the screen downwards; they will be subjected to physical forces and bounce back and forth between objects, similar to a ball. Then, if they don’t hit any more objects, your character will fall to the bottom of the screen, ending that turn.
Combat in Roundguard
In Roundguard levels, your enemies will appear at random locations. If your character bounces onto an enemy, both will deal damage to each other. You will deal damage to the enemy corresponding to your character’s attack stat. Similarly, the enemy will return damage to your character corresponding to their attack stat. If an enemy is damaged to the point of losing all health, they will be completely removed from the level and you will gain experience. When you have enough experience, your character will level up, and all their stats will increase.
Once your character has been shot out of the machine, you can tap the book in the bottom left corner of the screen to use your character’s skills. Using any skill will consume your character’s Mana. Mana will be restored when your character collides with the blue vials in the level. The Roundguard interface also has a similar book on the right. When you acquire additional skills, they will be placed in that book for you to use.
You will win the level if you defeat all enemies. Conversely, if your character runs out of health, the game will end and all your progress for that playthrough will be wiped out.
Intuitive Stat Interface
You can monitor your character’s stats on the left side of the screen. Enemy stats are displayed visually on the right side of the screen. In Roundguard, health is represented by a heart, energy by a blue circle, and attack by a fist. Additionally, Roundguard has an XP bar so you can track when your character is about to level up.
Managing Your Character’s Health
As mentioned above, if your character runs out of health, the game ends immediately. This is a rather severe penalty in Roundguard. Therefore, to have a longer playthrough, you need to carefully manage your character’s health. Your character will inevitably lose health to attack enemies. So, pay attention to picking up health potions to keep your character safe.
Roundguard has another mechanism you need to pay attention to: spike traps and moving mats at the bottom of the screen. When your character falls into a spike trap, they will take damage. However, if they fall onto a mat, they will be safe. Therefore, try to collide with as many enemies as possible. Also, adjust your shooting direction and timing so that your character lands on the mat.
