At first, the feeling is quite strange, because the game doesn’t require quick reflexes or precise aiming, but instead makes you stop, look at the pile of components in front of you, and think about how to assemble them logically.
After playing for a while, I realized that the appeal of Bad Piggies lies in the fact that there isn’t a single solution for each level. Sometimes the vehicle runs on the ground, sometimes it flies, sometimes it rolls around and somehow still reaches the finish line. In reality, the experience is a constant trial-and-error process. If the vehicle breaks, you rebuild it, change a few parts, and try again. Each time you press the start button, you’re filled with curiosity, wondering how the machine you just invented will work.
Free vehicle assembly
While playing Bad Piggies, most obvious thing is that you don’t control the character in the usual way you would; well, not like a bird, anyway. As a piggie, you spend most of your time… assembling. You are given everything, from wheels and engines to propellers and loose wooden frames, with which to make a machine that carries the pigs. When I first began playing, I would often assemble things however I liked. I attached what I thought was right and pressed the button to see what it did.
After playing for a while, I started thinking more carefully before assembling. Ah, if you put the wheels here, the car would be more balanced. If you mounted the engine lower, it might be less likely to tip over. In reality, the experience felt like experimenting with small models; if it was wrong, you fix it; if it broke, you rebuild it.
Fun physics mechanics
Bad Piggies is incredibly physical, as made evident by the first few attempts. It tips over when you make it go too fast. When the wings are placed incorrectly, the plane will rise up after which it will fall down freely. When a frame is unstable, it breaks when it falls. When I first started playing, I didn’t expect to win every time, so whenever I pressed the start button, there was a bit of suspense.
After playing for a while, I realized that the interesting thing is that even when you fail, the game still makes you want to see what will happen next. In reality, during the experience, there were times when the car broke apart in very funny ways, making me laugh instead of feel annoyed. Therefore, failure in Bad Piggies doesn’t feel like a punishment, but rather like another experiment. You’re not forced to do it perfectly, but encouraged to play, mess it up, and then try again for fun.
Diverse levels, opening up many different solutions
Bad Piggies isn’t just a few repetitive levels. As you progress, the levels introduce different terrains and objectives. Some require climbing steep hills, others flying, and some navigating very narrow paths. When I first started playing, I thought each level would have a single “standard” solution. But after playing for a while, I realized that wasn’t the case.
In reality, for the same level, I could try several different configurations. Sometimes I’d make the car run on the ground, other times I’d try attaching wings to fly. Some methods are faster, others slower but safer. This openness prevents the game from feeling restrictive. You don’t just play to complete levels, but also to see how you can do it differently. This led me to revisit old levels quite a few times, just to try out a new idea that popped into my head.
Graphics and sound
Bad Piggies retains the familiar cartoon graphic style from the Angry Birds universe, but it’s softened and made more fun to suit the crafting and experimenting atmosphere. From the very first levels, I saw the pigs with their bewildered faces and funny expressions; just looking at them made me laugh. Components like wheels, engines, propellers, and wooden frames are drawn simply with clear colors, so assembly isn’t confusing.
In reality, what I liked most was how the game depicted the moments when the car broke down. The car overturned, shattered, parts flew everywhere, and the pigs rolled around with very realistic faces, creating a sense of failure that was still fun. These movements made the trial-and-error process lighter and less stressful.
Bad Piggies is backed by nice music that doesn’t turn too forceful or overwhelming. While playing for a while, I found the music more of keeping the relaxed atmosphere than making pressure on the player. The sound of crashes, rolling wheels, purring engines and the squeal of pigs when a car breaks down is very gratifying to hear, it instantly tells you what is happening.
