Clash of Critters tasks players with building up a customized camp and duking it out against rival teams. Developed by Farlight Games and published under Lilith Games’ FARLIGHT PTE. LTD. label, Clash of Critters mashes casual strategy and monster catching into one package. Players are basically tasked with hunting down over 100 different creatures to build out a roster for tactical fights. Throw in some base building and a quirky pinball mechanic for getting loot, and there is a lot going on here.
Collect and train unique critters
Getting your hands on the roster of over 100 distinct Critters is where the main gameplay loop actually starts. When trying to counter specific enemy types during a tough stage, you have to swap around different creatures to exploit weaknesses. Figuring out all those individual skills and interactions definitely takes some trial and error before it clicks.
Once you actually find the monsters you want to use, keeping them strong means hunting down duplicate copies and specific resources. It is a pretty heavy progression system that expects players to constantly farm for upgrades. Anyone hoping to just breeze through without engaging in the upgrade grind will probably hit a wall pretty fast.
Engage in strategic battles
In Clash of Critters, expect the combat to be heavily inspired by standard tower defence rules as you look to survive unending waves of zombies. The only real way to block the incoming undead by placing units carefully. Getting the positioning wrong here is usually quite punishing. Before the players advance towards the lanes, you should ensure to set up your Tower Defenses.
Players experiment with specific formation set-ups such as balance, triangle and wave shaped formations. Moving units into a triangle formation just as the zombies break through your frontline and knowing how your critters work together can win you the game. When you lose because of a formation, that can be frustrating, but it helps in recalibrating the strategy.
Play for pinball rewards
Instead of just tapping menus for items, players actually jump into a pinball mini-game to farm essential resources and new critters. It gives Clash of Critters a weirdly nostalgic arcade vibe that breaks up the constant tower defense strategizing. Bouncing a ball around for loot is fun, though having to play pinball every time you want camp upgrades might annoy hardcore strategy fans.
This whole system means even a quick five-minute break can earn you the materials needed to beef up your squad. When mindlessly launching the pinball during a short commute, it is nice to see those reward drops trickling in. Just don’t expect it to completely replace the main strategic gameplay, as it really functions more as a side activity.
Build your personalized camp
Between all the zombie fighting and pinball bouncing, players head back to a personal home base to manage their creature collection. Upgrading this central hub allows you to nurture your team and prep them for whatever challenge is up next. While making the camp look nice is a decent distraction, customizing decorations doesn’t actually appeal to everybody.
You can drag around different buildings and customize the space to give the camp a bit of your own personality. When reorganizing your layout right after unlocking a new tier of upgrades, it definitely feels like you are making tangible progress. Still, trying to optimize the space can feel a bit like busywork if you mostly just care about the combat.
Compete in multiplayer battles
Those looking for more than just zombie waves can jump into the PvP modes to test their setups against other real players. Fighting for a spot on the leaderboards means putting your carefully crafted formations right in the crosshairs of rival trainers. Unsurprisingly, the competitive scene gets incredibly sweaty, and poorly optimized teams will get crushed instantly.
You can even launch direct raids against other players’ camps to steal resources and fuel your own upgrades. When sneaking into a rival base to raid their hard-earned materials, Clash of Critters suddenly feels a lot more cutthroat. Having to worry about base defense alongside regular combat might feel a little stressful for casual players.
Experience a unique genre blend
Clash of Critters really tries to do something different by mixing monster catching, tower defense, and arcade pinball into a single app. Fun fact, this project actually went by the name ‘Ace Trainers’ early in development before settling on the current title. Trying to mash so many drastically different mechanics together can honestly feel a bit disjointed during the first few hours.
If you like Pokemon-styled creature collecting, you will be mostly at home here, although the addition of PvP and base management makes things different. While trying to balance base upgrades and sort out your pinball rewards, the gameplay loop definitely keeps you busy. It is an ambitious mix that may take some patience to learn how everything fits together.
