Mechanical Lab is a creative indie game of exploration, crafting, and physical interactions set in a post-apocalyptic world filled with machines. The player will be a robot who awakens in a city where no humans exist. Only machines function as per their own rules in the Days Gone By game.
The 2D graphics of Mechanical Lab, although simple, are endowed with great strength and a cold mechanical setting from the very first moments, which causes isolation. At the upmost parte of the game players will find a machine building and assembly system: they will have parts and will be able to build out all kinds of mechanical structures, and combine all sorts of things to make different vehicles, or machines to help them overcome obstacles, fix mechanical puzzles and ultimately with the aim of surviving.

There are times when the vehicle you just assembled runs for exactly… two seconds before flipping over, but the feeling isn’t unpleasant at all.
On the contrary, it creates a strange kind of curiosity: “Huh, why did it flip over?”, then you start looking at the center of gravity, wheel direction, engine position. After playing for a while, I realized this game doesn’t reward doing it right, but rewards daring to try.
Sometimes you assemble a machine that looks extremely illogical, doesn’t resemble any vehicle at all, but it overcomes obstacles that previous serious designs failed to overcome. And as you progress, the number of components increases, so does the possibility of error, but the joy of finding a way to operate it logically becomes much clearer.
Imperfect physics
Mechanical Lab isn’t the kind of game with smooth, fluid physics. In fact, there are times when the machinery shakes a bit strangely, and collisions look quite rough. But that’s what creates the unique feeling. When controlling a self-assembled machine, you always feel like it… has its own temperament. Going too fast causes it to flip over. Braking hard causes it to skid. Climbing a steep slope causes the rear wheel to start spinning.
In the advanced levels, when the terrain becomes more complicated, the physics will start to affect your mind by a significant amount. It’s no longer about ‘assembling for aesthetics’ or assembling for power, but about assembling it to be stable, with a recoil-free self-destruction. I paused in some sections for a long time not because it was difficult but because I was trying to figure out why the same design, with a tiny difference in landing angle, produced very different results.
This feeling arises because the game doesn’t hide its flaws. It lets you clearly see the consequences of each assembly decision. And once you understand that, you begin to respect each wheel, each joint more.
Exploring the Robot City
The setting of Mechanical Lab is not noisy. Not much dialogue. It doesn’t try to tell a story in a fast-paced way. When moving through the abandoned robot city areas, the dominant feeling is emptiness. Everything is metal, wires, old structures. At times, I stopped for a few seconds just to look at a background scene, without any particular goal.
The good thing is that the game doesn’t try to explain too much. You’re not told exactly what happened to this world. Only scattered pieces are provided, enough to spark thought. Therefore, exploration isn’t about completing a mission, but more like wandering through a place that once had life. This feeling is even more pronounced when you control only one robot, without teammates or frequently accompanying NPCs.
Graphics and sound
The graphics of Mechanical Lab aren’t the kind that immediately make you say “wow.” Initially, my first impression of the game was that it was quite simple, even somewhat bland. The dominant color scheme leaned heavily towards gray, metallic brown, and dark blue.
There were few warm colors and few unnecessary decorative details. But after playing for a while, I began to understand why the game chose this style. The mechanical environment, the abandoned robot city, the tangled wires, and the old industrial structures needed a restrained style; overdoing it might backfire.
The sound was designed to fit this approach. There was no threatening background music. In most cases, it was a thing sound of machines, wheels spinning, metal scratching metal, collision; pretty dry sound. In some sections only the faintest of environmental sounds were heard. This feeling usually strikes you when in an open space, doing nothing.
