Here, the tower floors, monsters, loot chests, and even the buffs you receive all change. After playing for a while, I started to see the appeal of this roguelike style. The turns are very smooth, the loot drops are great, and you win every battle.
Some turns involve encountering difficult monsters right from the first few floors, requiring strategic thinking to conserve health. It feels like trying your luck but still needs skill, not pure chance. Losing isn’t too frustrating, because you know things might be different next time. Sometimes you’re climbing very smoothly, feeling confident, then one careless mistake and you’re gone. You lose everything and have to start over.
Fast-paced combat, elemental combination
Phantom Tower’s combat isn’t the kind where you stand still, press skills, and wait for cooldowns. The pace is quite fast, requiring constant movement, dodging, and timing your attacks. It was a bit clumsy at first because the monsters hit hard, and carelessness can lead to rapid health loss. Especially when you unlock skills with different elemental attributes.
The game lets you combine these power types, and when activated at the right time, the explosive effects are very satisfying. There are times when I can dodge a near-miss attack, then counterattack with a combo, which feels quite exhilarating.
In later levels, there are more monsters, and the fighting is more frustrating, so you can’t just charge in randomly. You have to watch, anticipate, and sometimes even retreat a bit to save your life.
Character development, buffs, and equipment system
Another factor that contributes to the gameβs addictiveness is that you can build your character during each turn without getting board. You will receive new weapons and armor and get one-time buffs like Tower Blessings. At times, I lay heavy damage while subsequently clearing a bunch of monsters. There are other times when I am more tanky, taking damage well, and slowly but surely fighting back. It doesn’t always go my way what towards me I have found not to feel lucky. However, that is what renders this interesting.
There were times I was planning a build, but then the game gave me equipment that suited a completely different style, so I changed direction. After playing for a while, I started paying attention to which items suited my play style and which were just temporary. It felt like I was experimenting while playing.
I would die if I make mistakes. But if I died, I could make another try next time. In addition, you have an upgrade system that unlocks stuff gradually so the more you play the stronger your character will become not just on one run but long term.
Graphics and sound
Phantom Tower’s graphics aren’t the kind that immediately make you say “wow,” but after playing for a while, I find them suit the game’s atmosphere. The color scheme is a bit dark, with a touch of mystery; you can tell right away that this is a haunted tower, not a bright world. The isometric perspective allows for a clear view of the surroundings, especially when monsters swarm the later floors.
The sound design brings to the tower a distinctive sense of space. The background music is not loud, it is usually somewhat low pitch and has a gentle repetition pattern so one doesnβt really mind it when listening for long periods. After playing for a while, I noticed the music almost fades into the background being unnoticeable yet helping maintain a fairly tense atmosphere. The attack, skill and monster-enhanced hit sounds are crisp and clear.
