Most of the actual gameplay loop comes down to wandering out into sprawling fields or mountains to track down monster dens. In Monster Hunter Stories, once you creep inside these caves, you grab an egg from a nest and haul it all the way back to the village to see what hatches. Running back and forth with eggs does get a bit repetitive after a while, but it remains the only way to expand your roster.
Deciphering what you just found adds a nice little layer of mystery to the whole process. When grabbing an egg from a nest, paying attention to its specific weight and shell pattern gives you a clue about the creature inside. It turns every cave visit into a small guessing game before the final reveal back at town.
Strategic rock-paper-scissors combat
Combat slows things way down into a turn-based system built firmly around rock-paper-scissors mechanics. Attacks fall into Power, Technical, or Speed, with Power crushing Technical, Technical beating Speed, and Speed topping Power. If you just guess randomly during a fight, the system will punish you since memorizing enemy attack patterns is basically mandatory.
Things get interesting whenever you and an enemy specifically target each other, triggering a head-to-head clash. Winning these specific matchups deals extra damage while filling up your Kinship Gauge over the course of the brawl. Once that meter maxes out, you can literally hop onto your Monstie’s back to trigger a massive Kinship Skill attack.
Explore the world from new heights
These monsters are extremely handy outside of fights since you ride them to navigate the overworld. Different creatures have specific field skills, like a Tigrex scrambling up vines or a Lagombi sliding fast across snowy plains. The catch is that constantly swapping your party around just to get past specific environmental roadblocks can interrupt the flow of exploration.
Still, bringing the right squad along pays off when trying to reach places you normally can’t access. Catching sight of a hidden chest on a high canyon ledge and calling in a flying creature to glide over to it feels pretty great. It forces you to think about utility just as much as raw combat stats when picking your crew.
Craft a truly unique team
In Monster Hunter Stories, you don’t just level up monsters to make them stronger; you also mess around with their genetics through the Rite of Channeling. This system lets you rip genes from one Monstie and slot them into another to transfer specific stats or abilities. You’ll end up hatching a ton of duplicate monsters just to harvest their genes, which eventually turns into a massive time sink.
This genetic tweaking is exactly how you end up with weird but effective combinations on the battlefield. You could be facing down a tough boss and suddenly use your fire-breathing Rathalos to blast out a surprise ice attack.
