Get ready to dust off those brawling skills because the old-school beat ’em up genre is back. Streets of Rage 4 takes the classic side-scrolling formula and gives it a massive fresh coat of paint. You still get to walk from left to right punching everything in sight, but it feels a lot tighter this time around.

Introduce about Streets of Rage 4

Dotemu, Lizardcube, and Guard Crush Games teamed up to bring this arcade staple into the modern era. The core loop in Streets of Rage 4 focuses heavily on throwing punches, landing kicks, and stringing together special attacks. Players navigate through neon-lit streets while fighting off huge waves of bizarre enemies.

The combat system feels snappy and actively rewards you for learning the mechanics. You can’t just mash buttons in a panic if you want to survive the later stages. This careful balance makes it one of the better brawlers available right now.

Stunning hand-drawn visuals

The development crew tossed out the old pixel art in favor of a slick, hand-drawn comic style. When you land a heavy punch or pull off a flashy special attack, the fluid animations make every single hit look painfully heavy. Hardcore purists might need a minute to adjust to the lack of retro pixels, but the updated aesthetic gives the streets a ton of personality.

Every character model and background detail pops with a vibrant new energy. The visual overhaul breathes new life into the familiar city streets. It sets a pretty high standard for how modern revivals should look in action.

An all-star soundtrack

Audio in Streets of Rage 4 is a massive deal here, especially since original series composers Yuzo Koshiro and Motohiro Kawashima came back to lay down some tracks. They are joined by Olivier Derivière to create a mix of classic 90s synth and modern hard-hitting beats.

While surviving a brutal boss fight, the heavy music pumps up the tension perfectly. The modern edge might catch fans expecting purely retro tunes off guard at first. Even so, the updated sound makes wandering through the city stages a lot more engaging.

Modernized classic brawling

Brawling feels familiar but introduces a clever risk-reward system where pulling off special attacks actually drains your own health. You can earn that missing health back by landing regular hits, but taking damage during this window makes the loss permanent. It takes a solid amount of practice to master this without accidentally draining your own life bar in the middle of a crowded street fight.

There is also a handy weapon-catching mechanic for controlling crowds. Snatching a bouncing steel pipe out of the air mid-combo keeps the damage numbers climbing and looks awesome. These little tweaks make the combat loop much deeper than the old days of just spamming jump kicks.

Iconic character roster

In Streets of Rage 4, classic fighters like Axel, Blaze, and Adam are back on the roster with their usual bag of tricks. They are joined by newcomers like Adam’s fast-moving daughter Cherry and Floyd Iraia, who uses giant cybernetic arms to grab thugs. When swapping from a heavy grappler to a speedy combo fighter, you really have to rewire your brain to handle the different mobility.

If you miss the good old days, you will be able to unlock the crew as retro pixels by playing enough. The old versions play differently because they are still rigid in its gameplay. It can be quite difficult to adapt to their lack of modern combo potential against the newer and faster enemies.

Co-op multiplayer fun

Beating up bad guys is very cooperative play focused with couch support for up to four players locally. Additionally, there is a possibility of playing online with a friend which was later added to the mobile ports of the game. It is way too chaotic to coordinate the strike while reviving a teammate when an enemy is nearby.

The action gets extremely frantic when everyone is throwing out special moves at the exact same time. Keeping track of your own fighter amidst all the screen clutter can definitely get frustrating in larger groups. Still, teaming up is easily the best way to tackle the harder difficulty spikes.

Expanded content and modes

The base game Streets of Rage 4 includes standard extras like an Arcade mode, a Boss Rush, and a training area to test combos. If you grab the Mr. X Nightmare DLC, you also get a roguelike Survival Mode and extra fighters like Estel Aguirre. Adapting on the fly as Streets of Rage 4 throws randomized buffs and hazards at you keeps the brawling fresh.

This survival mode throws out wildly different enemy combinations every single time you start a run. It gets punishingly difficult very fast, so casual players might hit a pretty hard wall early on. Even with that learning curve, it adds a massive amount of replay value once the main story is finished.

Streets of Rage 4 does a great job of giving old-school fans what they want while modernizing the 90s brawler format. Playdigious eventually brought the entire experience over to mobile devices. Just keep in mind the base game and DLC are sold separately via in-app purchases. Anyone with a compatible phone can hop right in and start clearing out the criminal underworld.
